MSN/WLM Status: What Does it Really Mean?
This post is inspired from Nadnut who has the following to say,
.
How many of you have changed your MSN/WLM status to “Busy” and have people approaching you asking all sorts of WTF! questions like,
“HELLO! ARE YOU BUSY?“
OR
“Hello?”
(5 seconds later…)
“Hello?”
(5 seconds later…)
“Hello?”
(5 seconds later…)
“Busy?”
.
How many of you have also been so accustomed by the misuse of the status that you approach a person NO MATTER what status they are having? Which is very true for my observation as most of the people on my list who are “busy” or “away” are actually very free to chat.
So, these are the observations for the 4 most popular MSN/WLM statuses!
.
#1
What it says: “Online”
What people think it means: You are free to chat with anyone!
What it should mean: You are free to chat with anyone!
What it really means to you: I am free to chat with anyone!
What it really really means to you: Mass cybersex anyone?
.
#2
What it says: “Appear Offline”
What people think it means: Where is that $#%%@$!^!???
What it should mean: You want to stay invisible while knowing who is online.
What it really means to you: I am feeling anti-social.
What it really really means to you: If I want to cybersex, I will approach you.
.
#3
What it says: “Away”
What people think it means: You are 30cm ‘away’ from the monitor.
What it should mean: You are physically away from your computer/device.
What it really means to you: I am away, don’t expect me to reply you.
What it really really means to you: If I like you, I am 30cm ‘away’ from the monitor. If not, don’t expect me to reply you.
.
#4
What it says: “Busy”
What people think it means: You are ‘busy’ being online.
What it should mean: You are occupied with the computer. Message me ONLY when it is IMPORTANT
What it really means to you: Don’t ask me stupid questions.
What it really really means to you: F**K OFF!!!!
.
WAHAHAHAHAAHA!!!!

But some of these folks are forever busy!! After a while it becomes a case of cry wolf and people will start messaging regardless of your status.
Appear offline would have been a better solution. Then again, if REALLY so busy, then still log in MSN for what? Busy right? Shut down MSN lor, then maybe also computer will run faster since one less app to hog resources, then maybe can finish work faster, the come back online to chat.

Jaywalk> Like for myself, I keep MSN on to discuss with my classmates regarding exams topics.
I don’t see why people have to justify logging in MSN to others!

Yep mine is constantly on Busy status as well cause of all the nudges and guitar smashing winks that I do not want to hear. Hahaha. And for people who are constantly gaming, their status might always be busy coz of msn has this option that set the status as busy automatically when full screen programs are on.

HA!
MSN Messenger is annoying. Use meebo — I swear, you won’t regret it. (No nudges, winks, popping windows, orange bar thingos and best of all, you can rename contacts to whatever you want to call them.)

There have been far too many occasions of people abusing the status that it doesn’t matter to me anymore. How can anyone always be busy? In any case, they will always spend a minute or two to talk to me even if they are busy, I really appreciate that!

Your observations are spot on, and it’s hard to drill common sense into people’s heads. That’s why I appear offline all of the while.

I face the same problem too. But then again i learn to just ignore the chat window if i’m busy. People will get it and leave you alone.

Haha~ So that’s what you’re really thinking of when you’re online… =X

mlmaestro> Which reminds me, add me on wlm leh!
arzhou> Eh, same for me also. I can sometimes walk out for the house and come back hours later with not even ONE conversation window open.
Daphne Maia> OoOOoo.. Come to think of it. I don’t see anyone using nudges these days. The fad died!
JayWalk> I think many people log on and only wants to talk to certain people. It’s not wrong but other parties will still chat them up unknowingly. And then both gets irritated because one doesn’t want to talk to the other and the other one is left in the cold.
nadnut> Yup! You are right. One doesn’t have to justify logging on but if everyone use Statuses properly, the (online) world will be a better place.
ced> Maybe you represent a big portion of the people that sets status to “busy” because of the irritating nudges & ‘winks’
Kym> Ya.. i am also sometimes saturated by inaccurate statuses that I just chat them up whatever it is. Most are really “busy…being online”
And Daphne is right, you can change names to whatever you like in wlm
Darran> There are some who abuse it and some who just doesn’t want the irritating functions of msn/wlm like the people who commented here.
DeltaP> Wah, I have also frens like that. And since I know they always do that, I’ll just msg them offline!
Bernard> That is definitely one way to do it, but I don’t like it when someone does it to me and so I don’t do it to others as well. I get damn guilty whenever I don’t reply for too long.
Ting> So? Cybersex tonight? WHAHAHAHAA
