Walking Around Singapore with a 2.21m Tall Man

The Singapore Slingers have a month before their next game on the 5th November against the Malaysian All-Stars and were all given a one week break. Nicholas took the chance to organize an outing with a few of the stars on the team and boy were we lucky! My favourite player, Eric Sandrin and the teams tallest player at 2.21m, Sam Harris, were free to accompany the bloggers for a night out in town!

The people in attendance apart from the basketballers were Mo, Nicholas, Hillary, Daphne, Molemole, Jason, KuKuNehNeh and if you haven’t realised by now….. myself as well.

Eric is a huge man himself who stands at 2.05m in height and already attract stares from the crowd with his presence. But when Sam arrived, he became an instant celebrity and if I get a dollar for every stare, jaw drop and photo request from strangers, I would have made quite a tidy sum from that day alone.

We decided to dine at Newton Food Centre and let them try out delicious stuff like Satay, BBQ Stingray, Kang Kong and delicious dessert like Cheng Teng, Chendol and Ice Kachang. We then drove to City Hall and took a long walk in the heat to the Esplanade and the Merlion and to Raffles MRT where they took a train back to where we started just for fun.

It was great fun hanging out with the basketball stars that day and they were extremely funny and friendly! I have to warn you people on the dangers of neck aches when talking to Sam Harris for extended periods. Wahahahaah!

Catch them in action on the 5th of November at the Indoor Stadium!

I Was The Top Model for a Samsung Event

The nice and ‘not-afraid-to-make-balding-jokes-at-himself’ Daniel Goh of youngupstarts invited me for a Samsung event for the new INNOV8 phone. It is a really cool phone and I would really consider it if not for the fact that I own a great phone already. Do read all about the INNOV8 here.

After a tour of the Samsung flagship store at Vivocity and some introduction to the INNOV8 specifications and functions, the bloggers were introduced to a contest where 3 of us could walk away with a spanking new INNOV8 phone! All of us were given 30 mins to take 3 pictures on what inspires us about the INNOV8.

Of course I didn’t win. If I had, I would be boasting about it by the 2nd paragraph in this post.

Anyway, I realized at the end of the 30mins that I was the most used ‘model’ in the contest. No less than 3 pictures were of me!

I Had a Hand On Jack Neo And He Had His On My GF!

I have always been skeptical of locally produced shows. The predictability of the script, the cheesy visuals, horrendous camera skills, half-baked acting & amateurish sound effects, just to name a few. And in some cases, especially in TV serials, I see ALL the bad elements I mentioned come together. It’s no surprise that I have not been watching any local TV show consistently and I seldom ‘risk’ buying tickets to a local show in the cinemas.

All thanks to molemole for telling me that Sheylara was giving out free tickets on behalf of Blog Aloud, I quickly emailed her and msn-ed her almost concurrently to enquire on the availability of two shows, ‘Money No Enough 2′ and ‘12 Lotus’.

Luckily, there are still tickets available for ‘Money No Enough 2′ and I asked for a pair for the show at Vivocity on the 7th Aug. FREE tickets! Although I am skeptical of local productions, the lure of a free movie, the good impression of the first installment of ‘Money No Enough’ and Jack Neo were good enough reasons for me to go for it.

I brought KuKuNehNeh (KKNN) along for the movie and boy, did we enjoy it! I wont reveal the story here as I HATE people who review movies and reveal the plots which totally spoils the movie experience. The script was predictable, the CG was cheesy although commendable for a local production and the advertising was too blatant for my liking. But Jack Neo did magic with the way he told the story. The issues he showcased were close to the Singaporean heart and channeled through incredible acting by the cast, especially through the malaysian actress, Lai Ming, who played the role of a mother in the movie. She was funny, she was believable, she made me tear. Credits to Mark Lee as well for he was the best performing local lad in the movie for me.

Jack Neo appeared in the theater after the credits rolled and his presence made the event even more worthwhile. He answered questions to the best of his ability and tried as much as he could to answer them in English. Molemole helped me and KKNN take a picture with him together at the end of the show.

I know that the critics have been harsh on the movie but I think it is definitely worth the money for a movie that will tug at your heartstrings. Thanks again to Sheylara and Blog Aloud for the tickets.

The committee were at the venue early but we were running around like headless chickens sometimes. Everyone helped one another and we managed to complete our tasks in time. My slaves, Hendri and Miccheng, helped me finish up on the table tennis bats which were given out as award trophies.

Happy 2nd Birthday Ping.sg!

Sylvia hooked the committee up with a lady named Caressa who made us such great looking and tasting cupcakes! If I wasn’t battling the fact that my love handles are starting to look like the edges of the cupcakes, I would have had seconds.

Everyone loves to hate a Chao Ah Beng and hence I got quite a lot of poofs from the pingsters. But I wasn’t the most hated! The winner is actually…

The awards were hosted by the laugh inducing duo, NTT & Mintea. Despite a few cock-ups here and there, the awards were given out at a very nice pace. I was nominated for quite a few and I expected to return home empty handed after awhile as other bloggers walked away with their prizes. But I manage to win the “Most Entertaining Blog Award!”

Melvin! If you are reading this, get me a new set soon! I can’t wait to caress it!

Sorry if this post felt very truncated and bullet like. I am so bloody sleepy and I cannot write this post as well as I should. But before I end this post. I will like to thank the following people. Uzyn, Daphne & the committee for organizing such a memorable event. Claudia and Miccheng for preserving the memories in pictures and video.

But most of all,

I want to thank all the readers who nominated and voted for me. Without you guys and girls, I would be just a regular guy with a blog.

Now, I am a regular guy with a blog, armed with two ping pong bats, a glass and a HP MINI!

WOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A Tale of An Idiot and Some Nice People

On Saturday, Claudia held a birthday party at De Coder’s Cafe with a bunch of her friends. The plan for some of us was to adjourn to PowerHouse@St James Power Station to party the night away and make Claudia drunk enough to strip and dance on the podium. Me and KuKuNehNeh had to leave earlier from the cafe as she needed to renew her membership card.

Molemole and her friend came along with the two of us and we cabbed to St James. We got into PowerHouse and I watched the seats as the 3 of them went for a toilet break. Like any time when I am alone like that, I will usually reach for my Nokia N95 phone and use the internet for I am an ADDICT and I am PROUD OF IT!

=P

.

I reached for my right jeans pocket and it wasn’t there. I checked my right and it wasn’t there. I felt a gripping sense of fear as I checked my bag to find no trace of it. I frantically checked the plastic bag that held Claudia’s birthday card and IT WASN’T THERE AS WELL!!! I frantically went through all the possible places that my phone could be and if it wasn’t a public place, I would have stripped.

I MUST HAVE DROPPED IT IN THE CAB!!!

Time seems to slow to a crawl as I waited for the 3 of them to come back as I needed one of their phones to call my phone in hope that someone would pick it up. They soon came back and I gibberish-ed the situation to them as I stormed out into the quieter smoking area to make a call. In my head I was already thinking,

“It’s a bloody NOKIA N95 8GB HANDPHONE! It will take a miracle for someone to resist the temptation of just turning my handphone off and pulling out my sim card.”

As I reached the corner of the smoking area and dialled my number, I was already prepared to hear a busy tone which will probably end up with me cursing the fella’s dick to shrivel up and drop and if it’s a woman, to have her vagina close up and develop moss.

A connecting tone was what I heard and I immediately light up as the call connected.

A man’s voice: “Hello?”

I almost screamed with hope:HELLO!! I AM THE OWNER OF THIS PHONE!”

“Hello! Yah. I picked up your phone in the cab.”

“Thanks for picking up my call!”

In short, there was a woman and a man in the cab who was heading to their home in Bukit Merah. There offered to keep the phone for me and have me collect it from them when able but I suggested for them to pass the phone to the cab driver to have him drive it back to St James with his meter on so that I could pay him.

I AM BLOODY LUCKY I TELL YOU!

But soon, an idiot will appear. I ended the call and wanted to turn back to the tables to tell them of the good news when a St James floor manager approached me.

Idiot: “You need to walk out of the smoking area and come in via the re-entry queue.”

Me: “Huh?”

“You need to go out and come in from the re-entry queue.”

“But WHY? I am IN the smoking area and I have not stepped out. Why should I do that?”

(and he starts to replay like a broken record)

“You need to go out and come in from the re-entry queue.”

(I got pretty pissed as this point and I raised my voice)

LOOK! I said I DID NOT EXIT THE AREA. I was standing here and MAKING A CALL. WHY should I walk OUT and RE-QUEUE?”

(He seem to be hearing me for the 1st time and mumbled sometime before he quickly walked away)

“….cause you stepped across the line….”

.

SERIOUSLY. WTF???

.

Anyway, despite idiots like this who have WEIRD grasp of the rules in St James, I am happy enough to be thankful to the nice and kind couple who wasn’t greedy and the cab driver, Mr Quek, who drove my handphone back and accepted an $8 payment despite the $12 meter. (His cab doesn’t accept visa and I didn’t have enough cash)

I am seriously CARELESS and BLOODY LUCKY!
