God, Christianity and I

The closest I ever got to Christianity was at a very young age when I would follow my Dad to a church. He would go for the mass while I would attend the children classes where the teachers will tell stories of the bible that appealed better to children and the public. I don’t know why Dad stopped going to the Church after some time but I stopped going as well because of that and maybe it’s why I became a happier kid as I could spend the weekend mornings watching cartoons on TV instead.

At that point in time, God played a role in life; like those times when I prayed that my Mum would get me the toy that I was eyeing at and also the time when I prayed that she wouldn’t find out that I failed my Chinese test.

She did find out eventually of course.

I love reading books and I came across a bible lying in one of my house’s cupboards when I was around 12 years of age. Out of curiosity, I read the bible from start to end and instead of enforcing the belief of God in my faith, I started to believe that it’s all fiction. Interesting isn’t it? As I think back into the thought process and life experience that I had back then, I begin to wonder if the books I’ve read prior to the bible were the cause of my detachment with faith.

I read up to 6 books a week back then and amongst the books of fiction like Greek folklore and princesses in distress, I had a great interest in science like astrology, physics and dinosaurs. I think the knowledge from such books gave me a good perception of what’s fact or fiction and build my interest in science over faith. So as I flipped though the pages in the bible, I had the same feeling I get when I pick up a book of fiction. Adam and Eve; their children living to hundreds of years; their children, having children, children and more children; and the sort of stories that fit very nicely into tales of the incredulous or such.

I begun to question the existence of God and I tried to look for his role/presence in the living world as I see it and found nothing. As science improved by leaps and bounds and explained more about the wonders of the universe, the smaller the credit I give to a ‘higher being’ that gives life.

As I mature in my years, I do start to be more encompassing in the fact that everyone has their beliefs and faith in a religion like Christianity does more good than bad usually. I do not deny God’s existence anymore but more then ever, I question the legacy and teachings he supposedly left behind and scoff at the ways that his children act in his stead, like the recent AWARE issues.

If you ask me about God and my take on him and Christianity, my answer would be that he could very well exist but I choose to question his existence till the day I meet him or truly feel his existence. I hate the fact that non-believers go to hell (if it ever exists). If I do ever meet God, I hope I can have a lengthy discussion on the criteria for entry into the gates of heaven (if it ever exists) and other questions about life.

And I’ll tell him to set up a blog and a Twitter account so that he’ll reach out better to the youngsters.

Men! Get Your Women to Support the New AWARE EXCO!

The organization for Women’s Rights, AWARE, is holding their EGM Suntec City’s Convention Center, Hall 402 this Saturday (2nd May) at 2pm. This gives women a chance to cast a vote of no confidence to the new EXCO whom are mostly made up of Christians whose reasons of taking over the old EXCO were to act in God’s name as they feel that the old EXCO were pro-gay.

Men rejoice! Now is the best time to advise your female friends and relatives to NOT go down to the EGM, and this is why…

Female Christians should run AWARE
6 out of the 12 committee positions are held by Christian women from Church of Our Saviour. Why is this awesome? Just look at their notes on ‘God’s Order For The Family’. Here are some of the highlights!

  • The wife is in subjection to her husband
  • Head of every woman is the man
  • (God’s) will for a young woman is to do 4 things: marry, bear children, guide the house, not be a reproach to her husband
  • Wives are to choose the submissive role freely
  • Submission means to continually deny themselves and yield the rule to men

Men! Good news ain’t it? Since most of the committee is made up of women from a church with such teachings and since they are on a mission for God, it’s going to be great! We don’t need women to have rights. All we want is a woman marry, near us children and not be a reproach to us. All women should also deny themselves and yield the rule to us. Way to go!

So take this chance to stop women from denying the actions of the new EXCO. Better yet, ask women to support the new EXCO. It’s about time the real women take over a Women’s Rights group.

Spread His word! *Guffaws*

Be AWARE That Anti-Homosexuality is Taking Away a Woman’s Right

Unless you’ve been living under the ground, digging for dragon eggs in Singapore, I’m sure you have heard of the situation about AWARE Singapore. If you have not, let me help by explaining what is AWARE and what has been going on.

AWARE is a not-for-profit, non-government 25-year-old organization in Singapore by women, for women which has a vision of improving the quality of life of women in Singapore by promoting equality. A couple of months before AWARE’s AGM held in March, there was a suddenly rise in membership and out of the 100 odd members that attended the AGM, about 80 were actually new members. No surprise at what came next. 9 out of 12 of the executive committee (EXCO) places went to the new members, including the position of the president of AWARE.

True enough to speculation, the new president, Josie Lau and the new EXCO came out in the open and admitted that it was an orchestrated move to takeover the old EXCO of AWARE and the reasoning given is that the old EXCO has turned AWARE into a pro-homosexual organization and the new EXCO wants to correct that in god’s name and bring AWARE back to it’s roots. (Correct me if I am wrong about this.)

I can be sure enough to say that many people, including Christians, disagree with what the new EXCO is doing. Bringing religion into a secular organization like AWARE and telling everyone that the takeover was because the old EXCO did pro-homosexuality things like bringing it up during sexual education in schools, screened a ‘lesbian film’ and invited homosexual people to share during speeches. Being homosexual is just the way it is. The gay kids won’t turn any less gay if he/she doesn’t take part in the sexual educations, watched the film or listen to the homosexual people speak. In fact, learning to embrace homosexuality at a younger age will lower sexual discrimination and reduce confusion.

AWARE is an organization by WOMEN, for WOMEN which has a vision of improving the quality of life of WOMEN in Singapore by promoting EQUALITY. Now which part of part of the vision resonates with its new members bringing religion into play and claiming that homosexuality is wrong. Are homosexual women not women? Are homosexual women not deserving of equality? The agenda of anti-homosexuality can very well be carried out if these Christians set up an organization of their own. But no, they had to take over a secular 25-year-old women’s rights organization and claim their actions to be in god’s name.

These women bring Christians a bad name in my humble opinion.

Saying all that, I am just a straight man living in this world and if you are a Singaporean woman and you value WOMEN’S rights which is what the real AWARE should be all about, go involve yourself in their Extraordinary General Meeting (EOGM) on 2 May, Saturday where you can have a chance to make your voice count. Details can be found here.

This is Why You Can Never Find “The One”

couple shadows

After attending a wedding on Saturday, discussing about love on a friend’s car and reading about Xinyun’s post here and Limetouch’s post here, I decided to bring up this theory of mine that I once blogged about in my old website.

First of all, I will to define the meaning of “The One”. It might be different from what you have in mind but here it is anyway.

“‘The One’ is the one person who is perfectly suited for you. Humans are imperfect, just like jigsaw puzzles, made of protruding and intruding edges. ‘The One’ doesn’t have to be the most good looking, the most intelligent, the richest nor the kindest, but the very one who will fit on you like a perfect jigsaw piece. “

I am not saying that if you like to fart and ‘The One’ will like to smell lar, but you do get my definition don’t you?

Religious people, put aside your god for a few minutes as you read this post. You guys tend to believe that the dude “up there” has something in store for you and “The One” is destined to meet you in 7 months, 14 days, 33 mins and 20 secs later because it’s in god’s schedule. The both of you will then see each other and then god will like whisper in your head to tell you that he/she is the one. Of course twitter might get popular up there by that time and god might use that to tell you.

.

To really get my theory across to you. Let’s just say that you are a 25 yr old straight male and assume the following which may very well be correct or close to the truth anyway.

.

Every person in the whole world is unique.

There is currently 6,602,224,175 people in the world right now.

.

The sexes are divided equally.

3,301,112,088 people are women.

.

15% of women are lesbians (I am being optimistic here).

2,805,945,275 women are straight.

.

Assuming everyone lives to a hundred and you only accept women who are your age or 3 years your senior or junior. 93% of the straight women are not within your age range.

196,416,170 straight women are within your accepted age range.

.

Lets just assume that for every 1000 straight and correctly aged women you meet, only ONE is suitable to date. Suitability in this sense means that she meets the MINIMUM standards in the usual factors like looks, intelligence, wealth, personality, etc…)

0.1% of 196,416,170 = 1,964,162 women.

That is ONE MILLION, NINE HUNDRED AND SIXTY FOUR THOUSAND, ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY TWO women in the world who are straight, of your age range and meets your minimum requirements of what you look for in a woman.

And we all know that everyone needs to date a person for sometime before you can really tell if the both of you fit each other like gloves.

So, unless you have met and dated 1,964,162 women in your lifetime, you will NEVER find the one. Unless it’s by PURE LUCK.

So, what gives? I just feel that, at some point in time, you will have to see a person and say,

“Hey, she/he may not be the “The One”, but he/she is definitely good enough for me to love for the rest of my life and I am going to work at it to see that I increase the odds of it ever happening”
